LOS ANGELES (GaeaTimes.com)- Proposition 19 which would legalize marijuana activities has been a bone of contention for years now. However, California citizens will vote today to make the Proposition 19 for legalizing marijuana consumption, trade and cultivation for the first time. This Proposition 19 will allow people who are aged 21 and over to possess up to one ounce (28 grams) of marijuana and grow up to 25 square feet of marijuana plants.
While speaking about Proposition 19, Drug Policy Alliance chief Ethan Nadelmann said that this proposition will “effectively leapfrog” California over Netherlands which in turn will be beneficial for the country. He also added that this would make California the leading “political jurisdiction” in the world in terms of regulating marijuana legally. Media outlets have reported that lot of celebrities, politicians, unions and even civil rights groups have supported Proposition 19 while many groups have also objected to it. George Soros, a billionaire philanthropist has said that “regulating and taxing” marijuana will give taxpayers a chance to save money in its incarnation costs. However, Ethan Nadelmann said that it will not save taxpayers money immediately but it will take away Mexican drug cartels’ business.
The media outlets have reported that despite the affirmative campaign there are many oppositions regarding Proposition 19. The opponents include Arnold Schwarzenegger (California Governor), US Attorney General Eric Holder, to name a few. Proposition 19 has also received international criticism as 10 Latin American countries have opposed it. Ethan Nadelmann said that if Proposition 19 is rejected then it would be because people who actually support the proposal are still unsure how government would react to their support.
