LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (GaeaTimes.com)- Gatwick Airport has been given the permission to operate the Airbus A380 super-jumbo which is the largest passenger plane of the world as of now. The permission means that both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways the airlines that have placed order for the huge sized aircraft will start operating from the airport. The aircraft is really big and can accommodate up to 555 passengers. So far Manchester and Heathrow has been the only two airports in the UK that could accommodate the large aircraft. The superjumbo was first flown in a commercial capacity by Singapore Airlines three years back.

Gatwick airport spent almost 43 million in renovation to accommodate the large sized aircraft. Stewart Wingate who is the Chief executive of the airport said in a statement that the usage of the largest passenger plane will help the airlines to save fuel and carry more passenger at once compared to other aircraft models. Of late the airport has witnessed a noticeable rise in long-haul traffic. As of now Gatwick is ranked as London’s second biggest airport only after Heathrow.

The plan to start operating the largest passenger plane of the world met with some resistance initially. The Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign expressed its worry over the possibility in rise in noise pollution and disturbance that may affect the adjacent residents. However, the airport authority is confident that the usage of the Superjumbo will boost the revenue of the airport. They are of the opinion that the Superjumbo uses latest technologies that eliminate the noise to an extent.
