Dussehra being celebrated throughout India

NEW DELHI - The festival of Dussehra, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil, is being celebrated through out the country on Sunday.

In the months of Ashwin and kartik, Hindus observe a 10-day ceremony of fast, rituals, celebrations and fiests to honor the mother Goddess and triumph of Lord Rama over demon Ravana.

Dussehra also symbolizes the triumph of warrior Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

The effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna will be consigned to flames at many places. The idols of Devi Durga will also be immersed in various rivers, lakes and ponds.

Meanwhile, President, Vice President and Prime Minister greeted the nation on the occasion of Dussehra.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil in her message said the festival symbolizes the victory of truth over untruth and good over evil.

“This festival inspires us to work for peace, unity and well being of the country and strengthens the spirit of harmony and oneness,” she said.

In his message, Vice President Hamid Ansari wished the festival to bring peace prosperity and joy in our lives.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said Dussehra festival symbolises India’s tradition of communal harmony and unity in diversity.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also greeted the people and said that may this festive season bring peace, prosperity and progress throughout the country.(ANI)
