Clashes in Somalia’s capital leave 4 dead

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A Somali emergency official says sporadic clashes between Islamic fighters and government soldiers have killed four men in the capital.

Mogadishu ambulance service chief Ali Muse says 18 other people were wounded Wednesday as the opposing sides pounded each other with mortars near the capital’s main Bakara Market.

Muse says fighting on Tuesday left seven people dead. The on-off fighting in Mogadishu over the past five days has seen at least 31 people killed.

Islamic militants have been fighting a three-year insurgency, aimed at toppling the U.N.-backed government that controls only an enclave of Mogadishu.

Somalia has not had an effective government for 19 years since warlords toppled the last such government in 1991.
