SRINAGAR - The administration in Srinagar has installed two more sewage treatment plants on the famous Dal Lake.

The plants are being constructed in the Baghe Nishat and the Nallah Amir Khan areas of the lake.

Locals feel that more treatment plants are required to clean the Dal Lake.Nothing will change with only two sewage treatment plants. There should be at least five or 10 plants like these, because the Dal is a very big area,” said Imtiyaz Ahmed.

“The already installed filtration plants don’t work properly, whereas sometimes they don’t work at all, and that is why it is a must have a minimum of 10 plants,” he added.

The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) has already completed three STPs, and has started the construction of the two new STPs in the region.

“Five Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) of a capacity of 31.5 million liters a day, are under construction. So much sewage can be cleaned by each of these plants everyday. Out of these, three STPs have already become functional at Laam, Hazratbal, and Habak. All of them are commissioned and are working fine,” said Erfan Yaseen, Vice-Chairman of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority.

“Two more STPs are being set up, out of which one is at Baghe Nishat with a apacity of 16.1 million liters. This will definitely help and reduce the sewage at Dal,” he added.

The authorities have blamed the unrest in the Kashmir Valley for delay in work, but remain confident of completing it by June 2011. By Parvez Butt (ANI)
