KUALA LUMPUR - After more than 30 years and 11 consecutive terms at the helm of the The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), S. Samy Vellu has declared that he would step down in January next year and hand over the presidency to his deputy G. Palanivel.

According to The Star, Vellu made the surprising announcement at the party’s central working committee meeting yesterday.

The 74-year-old politician said he did not want to wait till the end of his term on March 8, 2012 and added that his departure from the top party post would mark a renewal for the leadership. He further stated that he would not get involved or interfere in party affairs after stepping down.

Meanwhile, MIC CWC members welcomed Vellu’s decision although several expressed sadness at his exit. (ANI)
