Mahatma Gandhi inspired millions to unite for cause of freedom, independence: President Patil

NEW DELHI - President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Friday greeting the people of the country on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti said Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi inspired millions to unite for the cause of freedom and independence.

“Every year, we celebrate the Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October. This is an occasion for all of us to rededicate ourselves to reflect on the life, work and message of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi,” said President Patil in her message.

“Gandhiji taught us to stand resolutely against fear, to understand the importance of truth and to work for the eradication of poverty, illiteracy and discrimination. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti let us take a pledge to follow the path of truth and non-violence and dedicate ourselves towards promoting peace, tolerance and harmony and work for the progress of the nation,” she added.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as the ‘Father of the Nation’, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 with reverence all over the country.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as ‘Bapu’, or Gandhiji, was born on the October 2 1869, in Porbander, Gujarat.

Gandhiji was a preacher of truth (Satyagraha) and ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence). He started the ‘Satyagraha’ movement for the Indian freedom struggle. He believed in living a simple life and in ‘Swadeshi’.

He proved to the world that freedom can be achieved through the path of non-violence - a true symbol of peace and truth! (ANI)
