Govt., media trying to portray J-K agitation as a crusade against education: Geelani

SRINAGAR - Chairman of the Hurriyat (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani has came down hard on Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, saying that the Central Government and its biased media are trying to portray the ongoing agitation in Jammu and Kashmir as a crusade against education.

In a statement, Geelani said: “Kashmiris are a civilized people, and know the importance of education better than others. We do not need lessons from Home Minister or anybody else on the importance of education.”

“But New Delhi and the biased media have begun to raise a bogey as if we have opened a front against, and declared war on, education,” he added.espite direction issued by the All Party Hurriyat Conference nearly 80 per cent students in various schools attended the classes on Monday.

The State government had on Sunday directed the staff at schools to be present in their establishments, a day after the Centre asked the Jammu and Kashmir Government to reopen schools as part of an eight-point peace package for the Valley.

The recent eruption of violence has left the government searching for a new strategy to deal with the protests.

At least 93 people have died in the last three months. The Kashmir Valley has also been subjected to a series of shutdowns and frequent curfews during this period. (ANI)
