No punishment 1 year after Guinea stadium massacre
CONAKRY, Guinea — An international rights group says the killings of more than 150 people at a protest in Guinea have gone unpunished as the first anniversary of the event approaches.
Human Rights Watch said Monday that not a single person has been brought to trial for killing opposition protesters or raping women at the pro-democracy rally.
Thousands of protesters gathered on Sept. 28 at the stadium in Conakry to protest military ruler Capt. Moussa “Dadis” Camara. Presidential security forces opened fire on the crowd, killing at least 157 people.
Guinea has been ruled by a dictatorship since independence from France in 1958. The country’s first democratic presidential runoff was scheduled for Sept. 19 but has been postponed by several weeks.
