PESHAWAR - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University in Pakistan has decided to strictly implement a dress code, prescribed only for female students, to discourage display of ‘fashionable clothes.’

The university administration has issued a notification directing all girl students to come to classes in ‘proper uniform’ effective from October 1, warning that “those who defy the orders would face disciplinary action,” the Dawn reported.

According to the notification, the girl students must wear loose knee-length white overall along with white shalwar (trousers) and dupatta (scarf) on campus. However, those girl students, who wear loose burqa and white shalwar, would be exempted from wearing the white overall.

The university provost, Dr Shad Khan Khalil, said the decision to set a dress code for girl students was taken to discourage girls belonging to rich families from wearing fashionable clothes on the campus.

“Other students, who come from middle or lower middle class are feared to have developed a complex as they cannot afford wearing new and fashionable clothes every other day,” he said.

Asked whether there was any moral issue behind imposing a loose overall and exempting burqa-wearing students from it, Khalil replied that the overall would be so loose that it would also ensure ‘parda’ of the female students. ANI)
