Dr Aafia’s sentencing leads to surge in anti-US sentiments among Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD - Anti-US sentiments among Pakistani citizens belonging to different walks of life reportedly intensified following the 86-year imprisonment awarded to Dr Aafia Sidiqui by a US court.

According to the Daily Times, people across educational institutions, offices, work places and homes, criticised the judgement, with some calling it a new chapter in the decline of Pak-US relations.

Students of private universities reportedly expressed strong anti-US sentiments and claimed that they had been betrayed by the American justice system. Several students said the decision called for the government to review its foreign policy with special reference to Pak-US relations.

“We are losing and being humiliated by the US authorities, we need to change our policy,” one of the students said.

“Enough is enough, Pakistanis must realise that the US is not our friend and can never be one. This decision is a brutal example of convicting an innocent Pakistani doctor,” a citizen claimed.

Anti-American sentiments were also witnessed in Friday prayer sermons delivered by various religious scholars and later in protest rallies taken out in many parts of the city, the paper reports. (ANI)
