Chrysler: Dealer interest in Fiat exceeds goals

DETROIT — Chrysler says more of its dealers than expected have signed up to sell Fiats in the U.S.

The automaker was hoping for Fiat dealers in 165 metro areas as the Italian-designed cars start arriving in the U.S. in December. The company wants 200 Fiat dealers nationwide in a few years.

Spokesman Ralph Kisiel won’t give an exact number of dealers who applied for Fiat franchises by Wednesday’s deadline. He says the company wants to pick the dealers in a few weeks.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was put in charge of Chrysler last year when it exited bankruptcy protection. The automaker plans to start selling the tiny Fiat 500 in the U.S. this year with Lancia models possible at a later date.
