Oxford Union members ‘treated’ with discount at sex shop

LONDON - Members at Oxford Union can get up to 10 per cent discount on raunchy toys at a local sex shop in the heart of the university town as a “treat” for joining the prestigious organisation.
All they have to do is flash their membership card.
However, some members have raised concerns about the initiative, claiming it was offensive and “undermined” its women’s initiative.
Officials defended the scheme, saying it was one of several designed to ensure “best value” for members.
The Union, founded in 1823, is one of the university’s most high-profile societies and has produced 12 British prime ministers.
Listed on the Union’s website under the title “Treasurer’s Treats”, members are told they just “flash” their membership card to receive the discount.
“Your Union card just got a whole lot more valuable, with treats now available at 63 different businesses all over town,” the Telegraph quoted it as saying.
“From MooMoos Milkshakes to Milano Bar, Al-Andalus Tapas to Angels Cocktails, just flash your card to get your discount. Enjoy!” it added.
The scheme obviously came about after union officials and the local business in the town’s Cowley area negotiated the discount.
“It’s incongruous with the image of the Union, its prestigious history and the list of great and good who have spoken there,” said one source.
“It is a sign of the times. Even a few years ago this wouldn’t have happened, or, if it had, it would have kicked up a storm of debate,” added the source. (ANI)
