Walls to protect Delhi’s low-lying areas from floods

NEW DELHI - With the Yamuna river threatening to inundate low-lying areas along its banks, the authorities here are planning to build long walls to protect such areas from future threats of flooding.

Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the government has plans to protect the low-lying areas from floods in the future. Accordingly, walls will be erected along the river in areas like Tipti colony and the busy Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), the capital’s oldest bus station in Kashmere Gate.

Chauhan also said that people evacuated as a precautionary measure will be able to move back once the situation normalizes.

He was replying to a question whether the displaced people who have been forced to live on the roads will remain there during the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, the Yamuna level after receding, remained constant at 205.39 metres Monday.

The danger level of Yamuna is 204.83 metres.

The discharge of water from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage was highest at 1 p.m. when over 2.65 lakh cusecs was released. Two hours later, about 2.10 lakh cusecs was discharged and another 1.94 lakh cusecs at 4 p.m.

An official said the water will reach Delhi by Tuesday evening but will have not impact the capital.
