LAHORE - Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif, while stressing the need for unity, has called for signing of a ‘Charter of Pakistan’ by the political parties to prevent the country from any unconstitutional act.

“The nation must get united on the Charter of Pakistan,” The News quoted Nawaz, as saying.

“It is necessary for all responsible people to get together, get themselves locked in a room and come out only after they are able to find a concrete solution for Pakistan for the next 25 years and the country’s political leadership binds itself to democratic principles,” he suggested.

Addressing a gathering of writers and artists at the Alhamra Art Council, the former prime minister categorically rejected the martial law option and emphasised that democracy was the only solution to all the problems faced by the country.

He also asserted that if the PML-N felt that the government was not mending its ways, a change in the country should be brought only through ‘legal means.’

“The failure of the government must not be deemed as a failure of democracy. There is always some better ways of correction and we would continue correcting the government whenever it goes wrong,” he added.

Expressing thankfulness towards late Benazir Bhutto for signing the Charter of Democracy with him, Nawaz noted that after her death, the Charter was not implemented and all promises were broken one after the other.

He said that while he was not worried about what Pervez Musharraf did with his family, the former military ruler must be held accountable for the damage he caused to the country. (ANI)
