NY’s Tavern on the Green is back with vendor food
NEW YORK — New York City’s Tavern on the Green restaurant will soon be back in the food business.
But visitors to the bankrupt Central Park establishment won’t get the old meat-and-potatoes fare. Starting Oct. 15, vendor food trucks will roll in with trendy street eats including Turkish tacos and Chinese dumplings — right at the spot where the Tavern’s Crystal Room stood.
Four vendors will set up shop facing Sheep Meadow from about 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe (BEN’-uh-pee) says it’s a perfect scenario for the city that not only never sleeps but always eats.
Tavern on the Green once was America’s biggest-grossing restaurant. But it had financial problems and closed its doors last New Year’s Eve.
The city still plans to field bids to take over the entire landmark, which remains idle inside.
