CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Gunmen attacked two newspaper photographers in the drug war-torn Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, killing one and seriously wounding the other.
Pedro Torres, director of the newspaper Diario de Juarez, tells The Associated Press that two of his photographers, Luis Carlos Santiago and Carlos Sanchez, were driving to lunch Thursday when gunmen in two cars intercepted them and opened fire.
Santiago was killed at age 21. Torres says Sanchez is in serious condition.
Torres says he doesn’t know why the photographers were targeted. He says Santiago had just started working for the newspaper two weeks ago, and Sanchez was an intern.
Mexican journalists are increasingly under siege from drug cartels seeking to control the flow of information.
