Summary Box: September stock rally back on track

EARLY STUMBLE: Stocks teetered at the open Wednesday after a poor reading on manufacturing in New York. By midday they headed higher, leaving the Dow Jones industrial average with a gain of 46 points.

BACK ON TRACK: A strong rally in September has lifted the Dow on nine out of the past 11 days.

SEPTEMBER SURGE: The Dow is up 5.6 percent since the month began, even though September is usually a weak month for stocks.
