Nurse: Trapped Chilean miner’s Hope born healthy

COPIAPO, Chile — Hope has been born outside the Chilean mine where 33 men have been trapped for 40 days.

That’s the name of the child of trapped miner Ariel Tiscona and his wife, Elizabeth Segovia — the first new baby for any of the miners. A maternity ward nurse at a hospital in Copiapo says she entered the world Tuesday weighing nearly 7 pounds (3 kilograms) and nearly 19 inches (48 centimeters) long.

It was a rare bit of good news for a nation anxiously following efforts to pull the miners out alive.

Tiscona and his wife had planned to name the child Carolina but decided to change the name to Esperanza — Spanish for Hope — when the miners were found alive.
