KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (GaeaTimes.com)- Gen. David Petraeus, who is the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has slammed the decision of the Florida based Dove World Outreach Center to burn copies of Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks which falls this week. The commander of the U.S. troops has slammed the proposal made by the evangelical church and warned that the controversial act “could cause significant problems” for the American troops that are remaining in Afghanistan.
Gen. David Petraeus released a statement to the United States media in which he expressed his concerns about the political consequences that the proposal of the Dove World Outreach Center could have if it actually went on with its plan to burn copies of the Islamic holy book Quran. The U.S commander added that the Taliban could use images of the burning Qurans to manipulate public opinion and incite violence which could cause severe damage in the long run. According to him, if the proposal by the Dove World Outreach Center actually materialized then it would put the American troops as well as the civilians in danger and at the same time would be detrimental to the rebuilding mission of United States in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, on Monday, a huge rally was brought about in Kabul to protest against the plan of the Dove World Outreach Church to torch copies of Quran. As many as 500 protesters chanted anti-America slogans and burnt effigy of Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center. Although it has not been granted the permission to carry out the bonfire, the Florida-based church has vowed to proceed with it.
