Mozambique calm after 2 days of deadly food riots
MAPUTO, Mozambique — Mozambique’s government says the economy lost more than $3 million because of two days of violent protests over rising prices.
State radio, quoting a government report, said Friday that the losses included damaged property and lost production.
Antonio Fernando, the minister of trade and industry, told the radio that among those hardest hit were the thousands of hawkers who make their living on the streets of the capital.
On Wednesday, protesters threw stones, burned tires and looted shops, and police opened fire on them. At least seven people were killed and scores injured. Traffic was returning to normal Friday, and it appears few people are responding to calls for more protests.
