Mass. AG tracking deliveries of faulty propane

BOSTON — A fatal explosion at a Massachusetts condominium project has led the state attorney general to investigate the delivery of faulty propane to locations across New England and New York.

Attorney General Martha Coakley said Thursday the propane from a facility in Westfield lacks a key element: odorant added to the gas to alert homeowners of a possibly dangerous leak.

Officials began checking propane supplies after the state fire marshal found that a leak caused the blast that killed a construction worker in Norfolk in July. Other workers said they didn’t smell a leak. The propane was delivered from the Westfield facility.

Coakley said investigators have checked propane at 56 distributors across Massachusetts that received propane from the Westfield site. Six had propane without the odorant.

The investigation involves deliveries made after May 1.
