Decision on divisive German banker postponed
BERLIN — A spokesman for Germany’s central bank says a decision has not yet been made on what measures might be appropriate following comments by its controversial board member that stereotyped Muslims and Jews.
The spokesman says the discussions surrounding Thilo Sarrazin were still ongoing and no result was expected before Thursday.
The spokesman spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity in line with bank policy.
The bank already distanced itself from Sarrazin on Monday, saying his remarks violated the Bundesbank’s code of conduct.
Sarrazin’s comments sparked outrage from lawmakers and community leaders. Chancellor Angela Merkel said he should be removed from the bank’s board.
To remove him from its board, the Bundesbank would have to ask German President Christian Wulff to order it.
