DHANBAD - At least eight children and a woman have died as the wall of a residential school collapsed in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad District.

The wall of the Guru Govind Singh Public School on Tuesday collapsed due to heavy rains in the region.

“My sister-in-law was at the terrace and the children went out to do something. My mother called me up that the wall has collapsed and when I reached there, I came to know that my sister-in-law is dead,” said Keshav Kumar, a relative of a deceased.

“The wall is around 30 years old. The wall should have been repaired. This incident happened because they didn’t get the wall repaired,” he added.

Police officials have recovered five bodies so far.

“We are here and we have already found about five dead bodies, and the rescue operation is on,” said Suman Gupta, Superintendent of Police.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Dhanbad, 240 kilometres away from the school.

Rescue operations are underway and police officials said that there might be more bodies buried under the debris. By Ajay Sinha (ANI)
