Media groups decry death of Somali journalist
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s foreign correspondent’s association is voicing concern over the death of a Somali journalist in the violent capital.
The group said Wednesday that veteran journalist Barkhat Awale was hit by a stray bullet while fixing a transmitter on top of a building. Awale died at the hospital Tuesday.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said Awale was the second journalist killed in Somalia this year. In May, a journalist with state-run Radio Mogadishu was killed by three gunmen near his home.
Nine journalists were killed last year in Somalia, one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists.
Awale’s death came the same day militants stormed a hotel and killed at least 32 people in Mogadishu.
