DARJEELING - The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), called for an indefinite shutdown here in spite of assurance from police that the murder accused of their leader, Madan Tamang, would be apprehended within the next few days.

The suspect, Nicole Tamang, managed to flee on Sunday from the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Pintail village of the district.

“Today we met the SP (Superintendent of Police) of Darjeeling, Mr. D. P. Singh, and he has assured us that our Central Committee member Nicole Tamang will be produced in living condition. So, in accordance to this, tomorrow Wednesday and Thursday, during which we will relax the strike and rallies wherein police station is being surrounded. So, we are suspending the programmes for two days,” Roshan Giri, General Secretary of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) said on Tuesday.

Shops were closed and offices were shut during the shutdown, while roads bore a deserted look and people stayed indoors in the areas of Kerseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling region.
