UN nuclear chief to hold talks with Israelis

JERUSALEM — The head of the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog has arrived for talks with Israeli officials, as Arab nations push for the country to open its nuclear program to inspections.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor declined to say what was on the agenda for the three days of discussions with Yukiya Amano.

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons but Israel refuses to discuss the issue.

The Arab League this month appealed to Washington and other Israeli allies to support a resolution it plans to put forward at a September meeting of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency.

The resolution expresses “concern” about Israel’s nuclear program and urges it to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and open its activities to inspection.
