Violence near Gaza border wounds 2 Israeli troops

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says two of its troops have been lightly wounded by a mortar shell fired from Gaza.

The incident came a day after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant who the military said was planting a bomb along the border.

A small Palestinian group, known as Popular Resistance Committees and affiliated with Gaza’s ruling militant Hamas movement, claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s mortar attack.

The Gaza border sees regular rocket and mortar fire as well as clashes between soldiers and militants attempting to infiltrate or plant bombs.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for violence in Gaza, though most attacks carried out since an Israeli offensive early last year have been claimed by smaller militant groups operating from the coastal territory.
