Newsday plans to hire 37 to boost online coverage

MELVILLE, N.Y. — The suburban New York City-based newspaper Newsday plans to hire 37 employees to boost its local news coverage.

Editor-in-Chief Debby Krenek said in a memo Wednesday the new hires will help increase local online content.

The newspaper has cut staff in recent years and has about 300 employees in its newsroom. The staff expansion will take place over the next six months.

Krenek says Newsday plans to add 2,600 news and opinion pages annually. The newspaper’s business section will be expanded.

Newsday is based in Melville, on Long Island. It’s owned by Cablevision Systems Corp. Audit Bureau of Circulations figures show its weekday circulation was about 335,000 as of April.
