Rwandan President Kagame set to win another term

KIGALI, Rwanda — The chairman of Rwandan’s electoral commission says early results show President Paul Kagame is headed for a landslide re-election victory.

Chrysologue Karangwa says Tuesday that Kagame is poised to win more than 90 percent of the votes cast the day before.

Long lines of voters turned out on Monday in the tiny central African nation. Analysts said Kagame faced no real competition. Some opposition parties were barred from participating, and the pre-election period was marred by crackdowns on opposition figures and media.

Kagame has overseen years of economic and social development since the country’s 1994 genocide, when at least half a million people were slaughtered.

Kagame will serve another seven-year term.
