UN brands Pak floods ‘major catastrophe’ with over four million affected

ISLAMABAD - The flash floods in Pakistan’s north western region, which are being described as the worst in the past 80 years, have affected more than four million people and killed nearly 1600, the United Nations (UN) has said.

Describing the natural calamity as a “major catastrophe”, Manuel Bessler, who heads the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Pakistan, expressed fears of the death toll increasing further.

“What we are facing now is a major catastrophe,” The Daily Times quoted Bessler, as saying.

“We are only in the middle of the monsoon season, and we are afraid it will get worse,” he added. (ANI)
