Study: US ability to probe nuclear blasts fades
WASHINGTON — A panel of experts says the U.S. government is slowly losing its ability to investigate a nuclear blast and quickly determine who was responsible and whether more bombs are out there.
A report from the National Research Council says the nation has a vast web of nuclear labs, equipment and experienced personnel. But those resources are focused more on managing the weapons stockpile and less on how to analyze the aftermath of a bombing.
Experts say U.S. nuclear forensics capabilities are fragile and deteriorating and need better leadership, planning and funding.
