5 killed in fighting in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Security and medical officials in Somalia say five people have been killed in fighting between security forces and a militia with links to al-Qaida.

Col. Ahmed Yasin, a security official in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, said al-Shabab militants attacked Puntland troops Monday but that security forces repelled the attack and killed five insurgents. Yasin did not say how many government forces were wounded or killed.

Puntland President Abdurahman Mohamed Farole said that an arms dealer named Mohamed Atom has been operating near the town of Bosasso and militants associated with the dealer attacked security forces. Atom has been singled out by the U.N. Security Council for supplying arms to al-Shabab.
