Floodwaters affect life in some parts of Himachal Pradesh

SHIMLA - Floodwaters have disrupted normal life in some parts of Himachal Pradesh.

With water levels in the region’s Sutlej River recording higher than normal this month, the numbing specter of devastating floods is haunting the local residents near the state’s Shimla District.

Villagers in low-lying areas along the Sutlej fear an equally dangerous overflow of the raging water body.

However, the state government says while necessary steps are being taken, natural disasters have their own magnitude.

“Rains and floods are always expected during the rainy season. Precautionary measures are also taken but natural calamities have their own magnitude from time to time. We are taking steps, the roads have been cleared and the district administration has been asked to keep in touch with the headquarters,” said Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

Heavy thundershowers have also lashed the Dharamshala district of Himachal Pradesh, inundating low-lying areas and causing massive water logging of roads.

But some say that the rains are good for the farmers.

“The rains are on a full swing in this area as usual. This is a good and regular rain and very helpful for farmers. The water levels will also rise up which is a good sign,” said Rohit, a local resident.

The monsoons wreak havoc in many districts of Himachal Pradesh, including the significantly populated Kinnaur, Bhakra, Nirath, Kaloli and Nirsu, every year. (ANI)
