Solution to Kashmir issue based on UN resolution ’sour dream’: Ex-Pak minister

ISLAMABAD - A former Pakistan Minister has said that the country must recognise that a solution to the decades old Kashmir issue is not viable in accordance with the UN resolution.

Former Law, Justice, Parliamentary Affairs and Human Rights Minister Iqbal Haider highlighted that Islamabad has to accept the ground realities and it has no option but to seek solution to political issues through expeditious peaceful negotiations with New Delhi.

“We must recognise that solution to Kashmir on the basis of UN resolution is a sour dream,” Haider wrote in his opinion piece in The News.

“In the past 62 years, the UN and its members are least interested in the implementation of these resolutions. Even the closest allies of Pakistan in OIC are not willing to offer more than the lip service to this issue,” he said.

Haider said that one should not also ignore the fact that the Shimla Pact has already substituted the demand for implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir.

According to him, under the present geopolitical realities, the only viable strategy and solution present is to accept the Line of Control (LoC) as the international border.

“In the first face it would be in the best interest of the people of Pakistan, India and Kashmir, that both Pakistan and India formally accept the Line of Control as the international border for all practical purposes, at least for the time being,” the article stated. (ANI)
