Tight security for Jagannath Rath Yatra Tuesday

AHMEDABAD - The Gujarat government has deployed nearly 14,000 policemen to provide security during the Jagannath Rath Yatra here Tuesday, an official said.

The yatra is taken out with great pomp, show and religious fervour every year.

Satish Sharma, joint police commissioner, said Monday the deployment included three companies of the Rapid Action Force and 25 companies of the State Reserve Police and the Home Guards.

Surveillance and policing of the yatra has gone hi-tech with cameras put all along the route and the trucks participating in the yatra being equipped with GPS trackers besides introduction of the group SMS system for senior police officers, official sources said.

The police has detained more than 3,000 anti-social elements as a preventive measure.

“We are confident that the yatra will pass of peacefully,” the police officer said.
