Sens. to State Dept: Push UK on Lockerbie bomber
TRENTON, N.J. — Their own request denied, four U.S. senators are pressuring the State Department to push Britain to investigate the release of the man convicted of the Lockerbie airliner bombing.
Abdel Baset al-Megrahi (AHB’-dehl BAH’-seht ahl-meh-GRAH’-hee) was released from a Scottish prison in September because doctors said the cancer-stricken man had three months to live. However, a doctor later said al-Megrahi could live for a decade.
The senators requested the investigation in a July 7 letter to the U.K.’s ambassador to the U.S.
British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald says due process was followed and al-Megrahi’s release was not based on one doctor’s input.
A State Department spokesman says the U.S. is watching the situation closely.
