DHARAMSALA - Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao met Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and held high-level talks during her protocol visit.

Several top Tibetan officials-in-exile received Nirupama Rao at the Kangra Airport near Dharamsala, from where she was quickly driven to the picturesque McLeodGanj village, where the spiritual leader presently resides.

The Foreign Secretary met the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan dignitaries on Saturday as part of a routine protocol visit, confirmed Samdhong Rinpoche, the Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile.

“It is a usual visit. The Foreign Secretary makes one visit each year. It was institutionalised for a long time. Since she has taken over as the Foreign Secretary, there has been a lot of work and only today it has been materialised for her visit,” said Rinpoche.

Though the Central Government refused to divulge details about the visit, Tibetan officials said that issues of common interest were discussed in the meeting. (ANI)
