KARACHI - Over 260 people have been killed in Karachi in target killings in the first six months of 2010, a report released by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s (HRCP) Sindh chapter has disclosed.

According to the HRCP report, target killings in the country’s financial capital have witnessed a substantial rise this year, as only 156 such incidents were reported during the same period last year.

“This astounding surge in the number of the killings of workers of political parties and groups is a measure of the increasing political hostility and disarray in the maintenance of law and order in Karachi,” The Daily Times quoted the report, as saying.

According to the report, a total of 889 murders were recorded in Karachi in the first six months of 2010.

The victims included 99 women and 39 children.

The HRCP, while presenting the report, urged both the Sindh and the federal governments to take note of the rising crime in Karachi and other parts of the province and take immediate steps to put an end to the violence and bloodshed. (ANI)
