Bosnians march in memory of Srebrenica massacre
NEZUK, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Over 5,000 people are starting a 68 mile (110 kilometer) march along mountain paths in Bosnia to commemorate the Srebrenica massacre.
The marchers started from the northeast Bosnian village of Nezuk on Thursday and will walk into Srebrenica Sunday morning for the ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the slaughter. A mass funeral will be held for almost 800 victims that were excavated from mass graves.
Srebrenica was a U.N. protected area besieged by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 war. But U.N. troops there offered no resistance when the Serbs overran the town, rounded its Muslim Bosnian population and killed over 8,000 men and boys.
Over 15,000 people escaped by walking through the woods to government territory.
