Queen plans UN speech, then ground zero ceremony
NEW YORK — Queen Elizabeth has landed in New York for the first time in almost 35 years.
The 84-year-old British monarch arrived Tuesday at Kennedy Airport after visiting Canada. She’s headed to the United Nations, where she’s expected to appeal for world unity and peace.
Elizabeth will then visit the World Trade Center site, laying a wreath in tribute to the thousands who died in the 9/11 attack, including 67 Britons.
The queen’s five-hour visit to New York ends Tuesday evening at nearby Hanover Square. There, she’ll open the British Garden of Remembrance and meet families of the British victims.
Traveling with Elizabeth is her husband, Prince Philip.
