LONDON - At the age of 77, a widowed mum-of-two has been rewarded with a top martial arts award.
Granny Ena Mallett, demonstrated a series of throws, holds and teaching techniques to become a first woman to get a 7th dan black belt in Spirit Combat International ju-jitsu.
Mallett, 5ft 4in, also teaches weekly classes in the sport at her local village hall.
“I can deal with any big bloke who comes along,” the Sun quoted Mallett as saying.
“The schoolchildren all know about my ju-jitsu skills and think it’s brilliant,” she added.
Although, Mallett started learning karate to keep fit in 1979, she began instructing Spirit Combat in 1987.
The battling gran has only used her martial arts skills once in a real-life situation - when she grabbed a 14-year-old boy shoplifter stealing mints.
“It gave him the shock of his life and he quickly dropped the mints. I let him go and he ran away,’ said Mallett.
“Spirit Combat is all about using self control - but you have to be prepared for violence to defend yourself. I love teaching it and I certainly have no plans to give it up. I don’t see why I should put my feet up,” she added. (ANI)
