GREENLAWN (GaeaTimes.com)- The Greenlawn Water District has issued an alert to the residents of Commack after a fecal bacteria was found in well 16. The authority has asked residents to boil the water before consumption and also use antibacterial soap for washing their hands. The bacteria was discovered in the well near Commack Road during the routine checks. The well affects the areas of South Greenlawn, Laurel Hill, Commack and South Elwood.

The urgent notice has also been put up on the official website of the Greenlawn Water District. The site not only confirms the discovery of the bacteria on well 16 but also explains the precautionary steps to be taken by the residents. Crew Leader frank DeMayo said that the flushing of the well could take till Saturday and till then the water is being chlorinated. the site provides the details on the chlorination saying that calcium hypochlorite has been added to the water which explains the chlorine taste and smell. It has also added that the taste will disappear after the flushing process is complete. The water will be chlorinated till the Board of Health approves of it as being safe for consumption.

The fire department has also coordinated with the water authorities according to Frank DeMayo. He said in a statement that people can pick up drinking water bottles from any of the fire departments nearby. The site also mentions that a thorough investigation is being undertaken to determine the source of the contamination. The Greenlawn Water District has also kept their phone-lines open for anyone who have additional queries and concerns.
