BERLIN - Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to travel to South Africa to watch Germany take on Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals, the government press office said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the German Football Federation confirmed Merkel’s travel plans.

“She’ll be in the stadium,” Federation media director Harald Stengler said. “We’re happy that she’s coming. She’ll be a good-luck charm for us.”

The two sides clash at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town Saturday for a berth in the semi-finals.

A keen football fan, Merkel has been closely following the progress of the German team, one of the youngest in the tournament.

During Sunday’s Group of 20 summit in Canada, she slipped away from the talks for an hour to watch Germany beat England 4-1.
