NEW DELHI/ KOLKATA - Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday resigned from his post of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) President, citing that he was unable to devote enough time for state politics.

According to reports, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accepted Mukherjee’s resignation, and West Bengal Congress Legislature Party (CPL) leader Manas Bhuniya has been appointed to take over the post.

Mukherjee was first appointed as WBPCC chief in 1985, and has been continuously holding the post since 2001.

He also heads the Congress Parliamentary Party and the Congress Legislative Party, which consists of all the Congress MPs and MLAs in the country apart from being Leader of the House in Lok Sabha.
