‘London Bridge’ table to be auctioned

LONDON — The wood once held up London Bridge, but when that came down, it was turned into a delicate table.

The table is now expected to fetch thousands of pounds (dollars) when it goes up for auction this week.

According to a plaque on the William IV Oak Work Table, the piece was made nearly 200 years ago from wood that was part of the foundations of the old London Bridge for “upwards of six hundred & fifty-six years and taken up from thence in 1833″ by the men who rebuilt the bridge in the 19th century.

Another bridge replacing that structure was opened in the 1970s.

The table is to be auctioned off Wednesday. Scottish auctioneers Lyon and Turnbull, estimate it will fetch between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds ($3,000 to $4,500).
