War no solution to Afghan crisis: Qureshi
By ANIFriday, June 25, 2010
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that only talks can bring a positive end to the Afghan crisis, adding that military action alone cannot bring peace and stability to the war torn country.
Addressing a joint press conference with his Afghan counterpart Dr. Zalmai Rasoul, Qureshi said bringing peace in neighbouring Afghanistan was important for Islamabad, therefore it has ’sincerely’ offered assistance, cooperation and training facilities to Afghanistan in all fields.
“Peace and security cannot be achieved through military means alone in Afghanistan, and political reconciliation and economic plans are equally necessary for a peaceful Afghanistan,” The Daily Times quoted Qureshi, as saying.
He said that both the countries have agreed to enhance bilateral relations in politics, trade and economic and other fields.
Responding to a question over the reconciliation policy concerning the Taliban, Rasoul said that Kabul would not hesitate to enter into peace talks with the Taliban leaders if they shun violence, de-link themselves from Al-Qaeda and follow the country’s constitution
He also denounced the continuous US drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas, saying Afghanistan is against any attack in which innocent people are killed. (ANI)
