WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama Wednesday fired General Stanley McChrystal, commander of the US forces in Afghanistan, for speaking against the administration’s policies in the war-torn nation.

McChrystal was summoned to Washington to explain his remarks critical of Obama and other senior administration officials. He met Defence Secretary Robert Gates in the morning, and then with Obama in the White House, Xinhua reported.

Reports also indicated General David Petraeus, commander of US Central Command, may succeed McChrystal.
