Mallya wins Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka

BANGALORE - Liquor baron Vijay Mallya won the Rajya Sabha seat from Karnataka on Thursday with the support of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

Earlier, there were reports of differences in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on whether to support Mallya, who bid for a second term as an independent supported by 27-member JD-S legislature group.

Polling is on for the 18 Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Orissa and Jharkhand.

The other prominent candidates, whose fate will be decided today are senior criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes and former BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu. (ANI)
