Reed named assistant bureau chief for New England
BOSTON — Ebony Reed, a deputy metro editor at The Detroit News who has played a key role in producing and promoting robust digital journalism, has been named The Associated Press’ assistant chief of bureau for New England.
The appointment was announced Wednesday by Kate Lee Butler, AP’s vice president for U.S. Newspaper Markets. Reed will be based in Boston and report to William J. Kole, chief of bureau for the six-state region.
Reed has worked for The Detroit News since 2006, first as assistant city editor/online and most recently as deputy metro editor/suburbs and online. She has directed and organized numerous short-term projects across multiple formats, and trained reporters and editors in new online standards.
Reed served on a publisher’s committee that planned the newspaper’s decision to move more content online while scaling back on home delivery of the print edition.
“Ebony is a sharp journalist and a strategic thinker who will bring tremendous energy, imagination and initiative to our New England operation,” Butler said.
Reed, 32, previously worked as an assistant metro editor and a reporter for The Plain Dealer of Cleveland. Since 2006, she has taught basic media management through the University of Missouri-Columbia’s online graduate program, and has lectured in journalism at several colleges and universities in Michigan and Ohio.
A native of Lathrup Village, Mich., Reed received management training at Harvard University as a 2009 New York Times/Maynard Institute leadership fellow. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in media management from the University of Missouri.
